Royal Institution Discourses - Science Videos
One of the premier science lecture series world-wide

A series of science video lectures from the Royal Institution of Great Britain.  The Royal Institution Discourses have been held continuously since 1826 when they were instituted by Michael Faraday as a means of informing the public about the intellectual, economic, social and ethical aspects of science. They remain one of the premier science lecture series world-wide.

Nuclear Power Plant Safety - What`s the Problem? - John Collier, Nuclear Electric plc, UK Nuclear Power Plant Safety - What`s the Problem?: John Collier, Nuclear Electric plc, UK - Science Video Lecture

John Collier video recorded in 1995.  A significant proportion of our electricity is generated by thermonuclear reactions. The dangers attached to these processes and the radioactive products are well known and publicised. Much less well known are the measures taken to ensure that the highest levels of safety are realised in practice.

The Chemistry of Interstellar Space - William Klemperer, Harvard University The Chemistry of Interstellar Space: William Klemperer, Harvard University - Science Video Lecture

William Klemperer video recorded in 1995.  Radioastronomical observations of our galaxy have revealed hordes of molecules in the interstellar medium. Extremely fast reactions result in the high abundance of complex organic compounds in the space between the stars. Amazingly, the key to all this is the chemistry of the helium ion!

Tick, Tick Pulsating Star: How we wonder what you are - Jocelyn Bell Burnell, Open University Tick, Tick Pulsating Star: How we wonder what you are?: Jocelyn Bell Burnell - Science Video Lecture

Jocelyn Bell Burnell visiting Professor at the University of Oxford and President of the Institute of Physics.  This Discourse was video recorded in 1997.

The discovery of pulsars, neutron stars which form when massive stars explode (supernovae), took astronomers by surprise. In this Discourse their discovery is described and the way in which these bizarre objects have led to an understanding of matter under extreme conditions.
